THE BEST CUCUMBERS TO USE FOR CUCUMBER MARGARITA
When selecting cucumbers for the margarita recipe, it's advantageous to choose cucumbers that are known for their freshness, and the varieties that retain a good amount of moisture. Here are a few options:
- Garden Cucumbers. Traditional garden cucumbers are also suitable for making cucumber margaritas, especially if they are fresh and firm. However, be sure to peel and deseed them if they have thick skins or large seeds to avoid any bitterness in the cocktail.
- Kirby Cucumbers. These pickles are typically used for pickling and are slightly shorter and thicker. Perfect for really amping that cucumber flavor this cocktail requires.
- English Cucumbers: These cucumbers are seedless and are long and slender in look. The skin is thin and also perfect for muddling for cocktails.
INGREDIENTS TO MAKE THE BEST CUCUMBER MARGARITA
To prepare this delicious and fresh cocktail, you'll only need a few household ingredients, I bet most of these you have on hand!
- Tequila. I used Avion Reposado, and this tequila paired well with the cucumber and additional mixes.
- Triple Sec. You can use store bought (and brand) or, if you're out of lock and can't find it on hand, use equal parts sugar and water. In this recipe, I did make a fresh batch using 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of water. Simply heat until the sugar dissolves and allow to cool before usage.
- Agave Nectar. This is one of my favorite ways to naturally sweeten cocktails. You can find agave which is slighter "thinner" in texture (and better for mixing) in most of any of your local grocery/wine and/or spirit stores.
- Cucumber. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, use what cucumbers you have on hand or the type that you like.
- Lime. Fresh is best for this recipe, make sure the limes are soft to touch which is in an indicator they are juicy.
- Tajin. A Mexican spice mix consisting of lime, peppers and salt. It is used for a variety of Mexican inspired dishes!
- Dried Red Orange. This ingredient is optional but adds to a beautiful cocktail!
WHAT TOOLS DO I NEED?
As mentioned, this recipe is simple to prepare. Here are the items needed to achieve best results.
- Cocktail Shaker. Use your favorite cocktail shaker or mason jar with a lid to prepare this cocktail.
- Muddler. The muddler is what creates the cucumber juice.
- Cocktail Strainer. A strainer is absolutely needed to strain this cocktail so you don't have any "particles" in the margarita.
- Cocktail Glass. In this recipe, I used short cocktail glasses but you can absolutely use whatever cocktail glass you have on hand.
HOW TO MAKE THE BEST CUCUMBER MARGARITA
First, prepare the cucumber mixture/juice by slicing the cucumber into slices about 1 to 1.5 inches thick. Then, place the sliced cucumber into the cocktail shaker. Using the muddler, muddle the cucumbers until the cucumber juice releases and breaks down into a pulp like consistency.
Now, add the tequila, simple syrup, fresh lime juice and agave nectar. Pour in about ½ to 1 cup of ice and add the top of the cocktail shaker tightly on the cocktail shaker cup. Shake vigorously for 20-30 seconds until ingredients are combined.
HOW TO DRESS THE COCKTAIL GASS
Now it's time to rim the glass. Begin by using a small plate to pour agave on. Then pour the Tajin onto an additional plate. Take your cocktail glass and line either the rim or one side of the glass with agave and then over the lined glass with Tajin.
Place your dressed cocktail glasses on the counter and fill each with ice. Now, remove the top of the cocktail shaker topper and replace it with a cocktail strainer.
Pour the contents of the cocktail evenly into each glass and garnish with one dried slice of the fruit in each glass. Serve and enjoy!
TIPS AND TRICKS FOR BEST RESULTS
This recipe is quite simple, I would like to share a few tricks and tips that I learned while preparing and testing this recipe, hope this helps!
- Fresh Ingredients: It's no secret fresh is best. Fresh cucumbers, limes, and homemade simple syrup elevates this cocktail!
- Muddle Thoroughly: When muddling the cucumber, make sure to do so thoroughly to extract as much flavor and juice as possible. This step is crucial for infusing the cocktail with the refreshing essence of cucumber.
- High-Quality Tequila: Since tequila is a key component of the margarita, using a high-quality tequila will greatly enhance the taste of the cocktail. Look for tequila made from 100% agave for the best results.
- Shake Vigorously: Shake the cocktail shaker vigorously for about 15-20 seconds to ensure that all the ingredients are well mixed and chilled. This will help blend the flavors together and create a perfectly balanced margarita.
- Garnish: Garnish your cucumber margarita with a slice of cucumber or a lime wedge for a pop of color and added freshness. It not only enhances the presentation but also adds a subtle aromatic element to the drink.
- Serve Chilled: Serve your cucumber margarita over plenty of ice cubes to keep it chilled and refreshing. The cold temperature will further enhance the crispness and invigorating qualities of the cocktail.
SUBSTITUTIONS AND VARIATIONS
Substitutions and variations can add a fun and creative touch to your cucumber margarita, allowing you to customize the recipe to suit your taste preferences or experiment with new flavor combinations. Here are some ideas to consider:
- Cucumber Infused Tequila: For an extra burst of cucumber flavor, consider infusing your tequila with cucumber slices or purchasing cucumber flavored tequila.
- Spice It Up: Add a spicy kick to your cucumber margarita by muddling a few slices of jalapeño or adding a splash of spicy chili syrup. The heat from the peppers will contrast beautifully with the coolness of the cucumber, creating a bold and flavorful cocktail.
- Frozen Cucumber Margarita: Turn your cucumber margarita into a refreshing frozen treat by blending all the ingredients with ice until smooth and slushy. Serve it in chilled glasses for a frosty, summertime indulgence.
