    WHAT IS AN APPLE CRUMBLE?

Apple Crumble, not to be confused with apple crisp is an easy dessert made with apples, spices and sugar that's topped with oats. To explain, the apples are peeled and diced, mixed with sugar and spices and once marinated, turns into a tasty congealed sauce that has remnants of apple pie filling.

As can be seen from the images, the topping is made with oats (in this case, instant oats) and once mixed with butter turns into a crispy topping that is truly enjoyable to eat. In this case, salt is added to the topping that elevates this dish to a new level. The slight saltiness really brings the dish together, it's the hidden ingredient you didn't know you needed!

WHAT TYPES OF APPLES WORK BEST WITH EASY SALTED APPLE CRUMBLE WITH INSTANT OATS?

For the purpose of this recipe, use any apples you like! In fact, depending on the season you find this recipe, use apples that are in season! In this recipe, I used granny smith apples and they worked perfectly! Honeycrisp, Pink Lady or any other sweet apple will work perfectly!

It's equally important to note that the apples were peeled in this recipe but feel free to leave the skin on if you prefer. I have a toddler who enjoys making this recipe with me for the sake of her, I peeled the apples to make for easier eating.

DO I HAVE TO USE INSTANT OATS?

What makes this dish a "crumble" is that the topping is made from dried oats (or oatmeal). To explain, dried instant oats are mixed with melted butter and sugar and then stirred. Once placed on top of the marinated apples and baked, it makes for a delicious crust that is out of this world.

Can you use old fashioned oats or instant oats? Yes! Either oats should work perfect with this recipe. It's important to note for best results for this recipe, instant oats were used.

Easy Salted Apple Crumble with Ice Cream

    PREPARE THE APPLE FILLING

First, peel and dice the apples and place in a medium sized mixing bowl. Then, add in sugars, lemon juice, vanilla extract, allspice, nutmeg, flour and stir. Set aside to let juices release and begin to prep the crust topping.

    PREPARE THE CRUMBLE TOPPING

First, combine all the dry ingredients except the salt and stir. Next, add half the melted butter to the instant oat mixture and stir until coated and topping begins to clump. Then, add the apple mixture to a baking dish (including excess liquid) and top with oat crumb mixture.

Lastly, pour remaining butter evenly over the oat topping and sprinkle a good pinch of kosher salt on top. Then, bake at 350 for 30 minutes uncovered.
