WHAT TOOLS DO I NEED?
As mentioned, this recipe is perfect for a beginner. It will help build your mixology skills and have you looking like a professional in no time! Here is what you will need.
- Cocktail shaker. You should have a cocktail shaker on hand. Dust it off and use it for this recipe, it's so fun. If not, simply use a mason jar with a lid or any type of jar with a lid. Please note, you will need a strainer to pour the cocktail though.
- Muddler. This is a one-time buy and totally worth it. This tool will help to break down the blackberries and jalapenos producing a delicious syrup for the blackberry margarita.
- Small Strainer. The key tool for this recipe is a small strainer. Since we are making the blackberry syrup from scratch, you will need a strainer to drain the juice.
- Small and fun cocktail glasses. Any short style glass or margarita glass will do. I purchased these short glasses from Target for under $10!
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Prepare Homemade Sour Mix
First, if you are preparing this recipe as instructed. You will need to start with preparing the homemade sour mix first. It takes about 15 minutes as you will need to squeeze fresh lemons and limes. Head over to that post first and circle back!
Dress the Cocktail Glass
This recipe serves two. Begin by taking two short cocktail glasses (or glasses of your choice) and make sure they are clean and ready to be prepped. Utilizing a small plate or paper towel, pour about two tablespoons of Tajin or chili lime salt onto the flat surface.
Next, take a lemon or lime wedge and moisten the rim of the glass. This will be the binding agent to help the Tajin or salt adhere to the glass. Lastly, simply dip the moistened rim of the glass into the salt, turning the glass counter or counterclockwise around until the entire rim is dressed in the seasoning. Set aside until further use.
Prepare the Cocktail
Now, begin by taking the cocktail shaker and add the fresh blackberries and jalapeno (optional) to the cup. Using the muddler, begin smashing the blackberries and jalapeno together until the ingredients break down, forming a syrup. This step takes a couple of minutes. You will know the syrup is ready when it has transformed into a soup like texture.
Now, add in a few ice cubes and begin adding the remaining ingredients. Pour in the tequila, sour mix, honey and orange bitters. Shake vigorously for at least 30 seconds. It will be helpful to use a straw to taste the recipe and adjust to your liking. Too much tequila taste? Add more sour mix. Too spicy? Add in a bit more honey to lessen the heat.
Garnish the Blackberry Margarita
Now it's time to complete the blackberry margarita. Begin by adding a few ice cubes to each glass. Using the small strainer, pour the contents out of the shaker into each glass being careful to divide evenly.
Then, garnish the drink with fresh blackberries, jalapeño and mint! Now it's time to enjoy!
TIPS AND TRICKS FOR BEST RESULTS
- It is best to make this recipe as listed in regards to the fresh blackberries. I did not test this recipe using pre-made blackberry syrup so results may vary.
- Be sure to remove seeds for less heat. If you want no heat, do not add the jalapeño.
- If you need an easier option than the sour mix, simple syrup works great as well. Simply use 1:1 ratio of water and sugar. Bring water to a slight boil and dissolve sugar until combined.
- It is best to make this drink as needed. I did not prepare this ahead of time but you can certainly try. Be sure to not add ice until ready to serve.
- Don't have orange bitters? Simply add about 1tbsp of fresh orange juice or omit it all together. You will certainly still enjoy the cocktail!
