    Pimento Cheese Sandwiches

There are so many ways to enjoy pimento cheese, but sometimes the simplest is the best. My classic pimento cheese recipe is rooted in Southern tradition, and while you can add it to burgers, crackers, or even baked potatoes, one of my favorite ways to enjoy it is as a pimento cheese sandwich.

The creamy, savory spread paired with soft white bread and salty, crispy chips is just perfect. I love making these for picnics, baby showers, or slicing them into small bites for party appetizers. No matter how you serve it, this sandwich always brings bold flavor and a little nostalgia to the table.

    What are pimento peppers?

Pimento peppers are small, sweet, red peppers known for their mild flavor and low heat. They are often diced and used in spreads like pimento cheese or stuffed into green olives.

Why Are Pimento Cheese Sandwiches Popular at the Masters?

The Pimento Cheese Sandwich has become an iconic part of the Masters golf tournament, held each year at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia. For decades, the sporting event has served these simple, savory sandwiches to spectators as an affordable and nostalgic snack. Over time, they became just as famous as the tournament itself and are now a must-have for many golf fans.

    What Ingredients do I Need?

If you want to make the best pimento cheese sandwich, it’s all about balancing bold, savory flavors with a creamy texture. Here’s what I use to make my signature spread and what makes each ingredient essential.

Homemade Pimento Cheese recipe ingredients in a flat lay style. Small bowls are filled with cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, pimento, mayo, sugar, seasonings and Worcestershire sauce. Each ingredient is labeled with black text and an arrow.

Ingredients for Your Pimento Cheese Sandwich

    1. Cheese. I use a mix of shredded sharp cheddar and cream cheese. The sharp cheddar gives that bold, tangy flavor while the cream cheese adds richness and helps create that creamy, spreadable texture.
    2. Mayonnaise. This adds moisture and a silky finish to the pimento cheese, binding everything together without overpowering the other flavors.
    3. Pimentos. These sweet, mild red peppers bring just the right amount of sweetness and a signature pop of color to the spread.
    4. Seasonings. Salt, black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder with parsley, Worcestershire sauce, and a little sugar. This blend gives the pimento cheese its savory, slightly smoky depth and a hint of sweetness that balances the richness.
    5. Soft sandwich bread. I like to use white, wheat, or potato bread. The soft texture complements the creamy spread and makes each bite light but satisfying.

How to Make a Pimento Cheese Sandwich

    Make the Pimento Cheese

Start by shredding the sharp cheddar cheese. Prepping everything ahead makes this recipe quick and easy. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cheddar cheese, mayonnaise, cream cheese, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, and the drained pimentos. Stir everything together until the mixture is creamy and fully combined.

    Assemble Your Pimento Cheese Sandwich

Lay out your soft sandwich bread. Scoop a generous amount of the pimento cheese onto one slice and spread it evenly. Top with a second slice of bread and gently press together. Slice the sandwich in half for easy serving. Enjoy!

    How to Store Leftovers

If you have leftover pimento cheese, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will stay fresh for up to 5 days. Let it sit at room temperature for 10 to 15 minutes before spreading so it softens and is easier to work with.

How to Make a Pimento Cheese Sandwich in Advance

You can prepare the pimento cheese up to 2 to 3 days ahead of time and keep it chilled until you’re ready to assemble the sandwiches. For the best texture, I recommend assembling the sandwiches the day you plan to serve them so the bread stays soft and fresh. If you need to prep them earlier, wrap each sandwich tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 24 hours.

    Tips

    • Shred your own cheese. Pre-shredded cheese often contains anti-caking agents that can affect the texture of the spread. Freshly shredded cheese melts and mixes better.
    • Drain the pimentos well. Too much liquid can make the pimento cheese mixture runny instead of creamy and spreadable.
    • Let the spread soften before assembling. Allow the pimento cheese to sit at room temperature for 10 to 15 minutes. This makes it easier to spread without tearing the bread.
    • Use soft sandwich bread. White, wheat, or potato bread all work great. The softness pairs perfectly with the creamy spread and makes for a satisfying bite.
    • Cut sandwiches to fit the occasion. Serve whole for lunch, halves for casual gatherings, or quarters for picnics, baby showers, or party appetizers.

    FAQ's

What is on Chick-fil-A pimento cheese sandwich?

Chick-fil-A’s Honey Pepper Pimento Chicken Sandwich includes pimento cheese, spicy pickled jalapeños, honey, and a breaded chicken breast filet on a toasted bun. It was a limited offering at select locations but it's not currently on the menu.

Can I use pre-shredded cheese for the pimento cheese spread?

You can, but I recommend shredding your own cheese for the best texture and flavor. Pre-shredded cheese often contains additives that can make the spread less creamy.

How do I keep the sandwiches fresh for a party or picnic?

If making ahead, wrap each sandwich tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. For the freshest taste, assemble them the day you plan to serve.
