I am an avid tester for viral and trending recipes. It breaks off the monotony of testing and developing recipes and a fun way to try new flavors! With that said, I am sharing another recipe that has been circling the internet and excited to share my take on it.
This chopped version of traditional bagel and lox is extremely delicious and after preparing this, you will certainly make this again and again (and again)!
WHAT IS A CHOPPED SMOKED SALMON SANDWICH?
As mentioned, there is a twist with this smoked salmon sandwich. Often, smoked salmon is served "bagel and lox" style with a crunchy bagel, cream cheese, red onion, capers and oftentimes, fresh dill.
In this event, the ingredients listed above are chopped and combined until a mound of deliciousness forms. It is truly a fun recipe to make and the styling options are endless, this would be perfect as a dip or served on a brunch style board too!
There are several ways to prepare and pair smoked salmon such as my smoked salmon deviled eggs or one of my favorite pasta dishes, pasta al salmoné.
WHAT INGREDIENTS DO I NEED?
FOR THE CHOPPED SMOKED SALMON SPREAD
For the smoked salmon spread, you'll need traditional style bagel and lox ingredients.
- Smoked Salmon. You can find smoked salmon in most grocery stores. I typically purchase mine from Trader Joes'. In this recipe, I used the Wild Sockeye Smoked Salmon.
- Red Onion. Thinly Sliced for best results.
- Fresh Dill. One of my favorite herbs. Fresh is best with this recipe, perfect component to pair with the additional ingredients.
- Cream Cheese. Room temperature cream cheese will work best for this style recipe. I used whipped cream cheese from Trader Joe's that made it easier to prepare.
- Capers. Can't have bagel and lox without capers. This salty, briny component is a must.
- Lemon Juice. Adds a nice acidic touch to the recipe. I typically do not prepare smoked salmon with lemon juice but it worked here!
SMOKED SALMON SANDWICH INGREDIENTS
- Ciabatta Bread. No secret, I too purchased a loaf from Trader Joe's. You can use any style fresh loaf that fits your needs.
- Cucumber. Since we are preparing a sandwich, the cucumber provides great crunch.
- Tomato. Thinly sliced and sprinkled with a bit of black pepper for good measure. 🙂
- Arugula. This ingredient is optional and not listed below in the photos. It was a last minute addition but a good one. If you have spinach on hand, use that, if not this smoked salmon sandwich is good without it too.
- Quality Olive Oil. A tiny drizzle of good quality olive oil really helps to build a rich and delicious sandwich. This ingredient too is optional and not listed in the photos, it was a last minute addition.
HOW TO MAKE CHOPPED SMOKED SALMON SANDWICH
First, it is best to gather and prep the ingredients first. It will always save time and effort if following along throughout a recipe. After prepping the chopped smoked salmon ingredients, preheat the oven onto 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
While the oven preheats, separate the chopped smoked salmon ingredients and the sandwich ingredients. Then, on a flat surface, place the smoked salmon, red onion, fresh dill, room temperature cream cheese, capers, lemon juice and a touch of black pepper.
Chop the ingredients using a chef's knife until the ingredients are chopped down and a "mound" begins to form. It is important to note, this step could be prepared in a food processor. Once the ingredients are thoroughly combined and chopped, clean your work surface and set the chopped smoked salmon aside until later use.
The oven should be heated, place your bread into the oven for no longer than 3-5 minutes, just to allow the bread to toast through and become warm.
ASSEMBLING THE SMOKED SALMON SANDWICH
Now it is time to assemble the chopped smoked salmon sandwich. Using a bread knife, slice the ciabatta bread in half. Then, smear the smoked salmon mixture onto the bottom half of the toasted bread.
Next, add sliced cucumber on top of the smoked salmon following the sliced tomatoes next. If adding greenery, top with fresh arugula, lettuce or spinach. Lastly, if desired, drizzle quality olive oil on top for a rich finish.
Now you can enjoy this delicious sandwich that is perfect for breakfast, lunch or brunch! 🙂
RECIPE VARIATIONS AND SUBSTITUTIONS
- Seafood. Try variations of seafood such as smoked trout, or cooked shrimp or crab. Get creative!
- Veggies. Add more vegetables for an even heartier sandwich!
- Bread. As mentioned above, serve this with a toasty, everything bagel or your favorite fresh bread. This could even work as a wrap and my favorite option after testing yesterday was seaweed snacks!
