    WHAT IS A JACKET POTATO?

If you are American (like me), you may have never heard of this popular name for a baked potato. Instead of calling potatoes that are baked in the oven, "Baked Potatoes", the British refer to them as, "Jacket Potatoes".

And, the crispier, the better. Furthermore, if you wan't to really pay homage to the UK culture, bake the potatoes until the skin is extra crispy!

    JACKET POTOATES AND BEANS

Similar to American meals coined under affordable and hearty like a warm cup of ramen noodles, jacket potatoes with beans are the UK's version of affordable and hearty! If you are really venturing into classic British style foods, there's normalities around the layering of this hearty dish.

You must start first with the baked, crispy potato. Then, layer with butter, salt and pepper next to give the ingredients a nice mix. Finally adding shredded cheese followed by the creamy beans. In this recipe, I topped with additional cheese because who doesn't love extra cheese?!

    WHAT INGREDIENTS DO I NEED?

This recipe is very straightforward, like me, you'll probably have these ingredients on hand. Here's what you'll need:

    1. Baked Potatoes. Russet will work best. I made two jackets (baked 4) potatoes with beans so grab any size that's comparable for you and your family. We had enough for leftovers the next day!
    2. Salt. Coarse works best with this recipe as we will salt the outside of the potatoes and it will stick best.
    3. Pepper. Optional.
    4. Unsalted Butter. This helps with creating creamy whipped and flaky potatoes on the inside with the jacket potatoes are baked through.
    5. Oil. Use oil of your choice to coat the potatoes after cleaning them and before coating in salt and baking!
    6. Baked Beans. If you are able to find this brand of baked beans, this will keep the jacket potatoes as close to the original as possible.
    7. Cheese. I used white cheddar but you can use your favorite cheese or any cheese you have on hand!
    8. Chives. Always pairs well with potatoes. Don't skip this herb!
    9. Parsley. This ingredient is optional but the recipe can present a bit "bland" in color so I added for aesthetics only.

HOW TO MAKE JACKET POTATOES AND BEANS

    Baking Jacket Potatoes (Baked Potato)

Set the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. While the oven comes to temp, you'll need to wash and clean the potatoes and dry with a paper towel or kitchen towel.

Next, place the cleaned potatoes on a lined baking sheet and pierce potatoes with a fork to help with the baking process. Then, drizzle with oil and salt, massage the potatoes to make sure the oil and salt is spread evenly.

Lastly, when the oven is to temperature, place the potatoes in the oven and bake for 45 to 50 minutes. Please note, if the potatoes are not as crispy as desired, simply place your oven to the broiler temperature and broil (watching closely) until crispy. This step should take no longer than 30 seconds to one minute.

Warm Beans and Assemble Jacket Potatoes

While the potatoes are baking, it is a great time to warm the beans. Simply open the can and pour into a soup or sauce style pot. Then, warm the beans on medium heat just to warm through being careful not to burn (like I did 2x's)!

After the potatoes have baked through and soft in the center (and crispy), use a pairing knife to slice down the middle (the potatoes will be hot, be careful). Take a fork to fluff the flesh of the potatoes, add butter, salt and pepper.

Now add the shredded cheese on top of the fluffed and mixed potatoes. You do not have to stir again as the beans will help to melt the cheese. Take a spoon and ladle the warm beans on top of the cheese.

You can top additional shredded cheese and fresh parsley and chives on top of the shredded cheese and beans and enjoy!

    RECIPE VARIATIONS AND SUBSTITUTIONS

    • Additional Toppings. Fun fact, Brits also like to add tuna on top of the jacket potatoes with beans. Try it out! Or, add more of your favorite toppings, I added pickled red onion which really elevated this classic recipe.
    • Protein. Complete this meal by adding your favorite protein. Roasted or baked BBQ chicken breasts with BBQ sauce would pair great with this recipe. Similar to my BBQ Chicken Sweet Potato recipe.
    • Side Items. Serve with a fresh dill pickle, avocado, tomatoes or even a green salad, yum!

    FAQ

Are Jacket Potatoes with Beans healthy?

First, this classic and hearty meal is quite filling. If prepared correctly, the potatoes are a great healthy source of carbohydrates. The baked beans are also a great source of fiber. Overall, this meal is around 370-430 calories depending on the amount of ingredients added.

Can You Reheat Jacket Potatoes with Beans?

You can certainly reheat jacket potatoes with beans, when storing overnight, simply pack the ingredients separately (beans, potatoes, butter and cheese) and warm in the microwave on high!

What Goes with Jacket Potatoes and Beans

Pair jacket potatoes and beans with a side salad, chopped tomatoes and cucumbers or even your favorite protein. BBQ chicken breasts or thighs would go great with these flavors!
