HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE BLUEBERRY SIMPLE SYRUP

    Measure and Prep Ingredients

First, whether you are using fresh or frozen blueberries, measure the blueberries and place in a shallow bowl. Next, measure the sugar and water and slice a small lemon in half.

    Boil Blueberry Mixture

In a medium sized stock pot, pour the blueberries into the pot. Then, pour the sugar into the pot over the blueberries. Next, pour in the water and squeeze the lemon juice into the pot and stir.

Now, place the pot of blueberries, water, lemon juice and sugar onto medium heat and allow the blueberry mixture to come to a boil.

Once the blueberry mixture begins to boil, be sure to stir so the contents do not stick to the bottom of the pot. Once the blueberries begin to soften and release their juices (about 5-10 minutes), lower the heat to a mild simmer.

    Simmer Blueberry Mixture

To explain, the mixture should not be at a large "rumble" boil but a mild simmer with bubbling still present. Allow the mixture to simmer for 15 minutes. The blueberry simple syrup will be cooked through once the mixture begins to thicken.

Allow the simple syrup to completely cool before storing.

    Strain and Store Syrup

Now that the mixture is cooled, using a mesh strainer and an empty bowl or large glass jar, pour contents into empty container. Using a spatula or spoon, mash the remaining contents into the container.

    How to Store Simple Syrup

Simple syrup should be stored in an airtight container. It is best to use a container or jar made with glass, the blueberry syrup will easily stain.

Mason jars, recycled glass jars or glass sauce bottles with an airtight lid will work best!
