TIPS AND TRICKS FOR THE BEST SUGAR COOKIES
Baking is like science; the instructions should be followed exactly as written. It is important to realize and take note of the tips and tricks listed below.
- Room temperature eggs and butter. To explain, this helps the ingredients to mix more evenly!
- Sift the flour. Helps to alleviate lumps when measuring out your ingredients. It's important to note that measurements should be exact when utilizing any baking recipe.
- Chill cookie dough. Chilling for at least a half hour helps the cookies not to spread as much. For best results, do not omit this step.
- Prep ingredients. With this in mind, ingredients aren't accidently missed, and you can focus on following the written recipe in real time!
- Prepare wet and dry ingredients separate. A simple step but important to note, this ensures the batter is mixed evenly once wet and dry ingredients are combined.
6. Don't overmix. It's important too that the dough is not overmixed. Beginning with the butter and sugar mix, only mix for thirty seconds to one-minute tops. Once the wet and dry ingredients are combined, mix another additional thirty seconds to one minute and stop.
7. Use measuring spoon or small ice cream scoop. When scooping the cookies on a lined baking sheet. In like manner, this ensures that the cookies are uniform in size and have enough space to bake evenly once placed three inches apart.
8. Test the cookie dough before baking. A small taste of cookie dough never hurt, and you can test to ensure the dough is "seasoned to taste". In other words, omit this step if you're against it, no judgement either way!
9. Allow the cookies to cool on a rack! When baking time is complete, the cookies will be soft to touch. Carefully place the cookies on a cooling rack and let cool for at least ten minutes.
SUBSTITUTE FOR BREAD FLOUR
Thanks to a little research and reading one of my favorite baker bloggers cookie recipes, I have been introduced to using bread flour in cookie recipes. To explain, the first attempt was almost a catastrophe and too much bread flour can create a big puffy cookie and that was not the end goal.
In other words, follow these measurements for best results!
Given these points, if you happen to have bread flour on hand, use it! It makes a world of difference with ensuring the cookies remain chewy. If you don't have bread flour, use all-purpose flour and the cookie will still turn out great!
HOW TO MAKE SUGAR COOKIES
To begin with this recipe, first measure and prep all listed ingredients and preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Next, sift the flours and place in a large bowl. Add salt, cornstarch, and baking soda whisking until combined. Set aside.
Then, in a large bowl with a hand mixer or stand mixer, mix white granulated sugar, brown sugar and butter until fluffy and combined. Halfway through mixing, add vanilla and egg. Once the mixture is smooth and creamy, set aside.
Now, combine the dry ingredients with the "wet ingredients" (butter, egg, vanilla sugar mixture) mixing an additional 30 seconds to one minute. Be careful not to overmix.
At this instant, add your spring themed m&m's and fold until combined being careful not to overmix. It's important to note at this step the cookie dough should be chilled for at least thirty minutes.
HOW TO BAKE COOKIES
First, on a lined baking sheet place scooped cookie dough onto tray. Measure about a tablespoon and a half of dough or use a small ice cream scoop and place each ball about three inches a part on the baking sheet.
Depending on the desired number of cookies, two lined baking sheets may be needed.
Next, place the cookies in the oven at 350 degrees for 12-14 minutes depending on oven being careful to not overbake the cookies. The sugar cookies should be slightly brown around the edges and soft to touch in the middle.
Lastly, after baking, place cookies on a cooling rack using a spatula. Using extra holiday themed candies, place a few candies on each cookies while they are soft for additional decoration. Allow to cool for at least ten minutes and enjoy!
HOW TO STORE M&M SUGAR COOKIES
These sugar cookies will last up to seven days if stored properly. After the m&m sugar cookies have cooled, simply store them in an airtight container in a cool, dim area in your kitchen.
You can certainly freeze the sugar cookie dough. Simply wrap the cookie dough in clear warp and place in a freezer safe bag. This cookie dough can last in the freezer for up to three months.
