This idea stemmed from ordering a delicious pizza bowl from Marcos Pizza a few weeks back and I have not been able to get it off of my mind. By all means try this out at Marcos but if you are like me and enjoy recreating recipes at home, try this recipe out!
WHAT TYPE OF BAKING DISH WORKS BEST WITH THIS PIZZA CASSEROLE?
This is a great question! To explain, you'll notice from the images in this blog post that I used a large (and deep) cast iron skillet. This cast iron skillet is a family heirloom that I was beyond excited to use and share with you today. If you don't have a cast iron skillet, no worries.
Any deep casserole dish will work perfectly that is oven safe. It's important to note that the size of the baking dish needs to be at least 9x13" baking pan. And to point out, the deeper the baking, the better. This allows for you to pile the toppings high for a more filling meal.

WHAT INGREDIENTS ARE IN THIS EASY AND THE BEST SUPREME BAKED PIZZA CASSEROLE?
This recipe classifies as an easy and quick weeknight meal. Therefore, there is little prep involved and I urge you to include your little's if they are hanging around. My daughter thoroughly enjoyed helping me prepare each layer of this recipe after I prepped and sliced the ingredients.
On your way home tonight, grab these items from your local grocer. Or, depending on your favorite pizza toppings, now is the time to make your grocery list, add all of your favorite toppings. HELPFUL TIPS WHEN DETERMING TOPPINGS FOR THE BEST PIZZA CASSEROLE?
If you are unable to source the cooked turkey crumbled sausage, any cooked or uncooked sausage will work. If the sausage is uncooked, simply slice or crumble the sausage and be sure to brown in a small skillet before baking. Any type of link sausage that is typically smoked will work as well. In the event that you would like to omit meats to this dish, by all means leave it out!

DO I HAVE TO COOK THE VEGGIES PRIOR TO BAKING?
This depends on preference but I suggest leaving the veggies raw before baking. Since the crust is omitted in this recipe, you will want as much texture to satisfy your experience. With this in mind, simply slice or small dice your favorite pizza veggies and throw them in the baking dish. Let the oven do the rest of the work!
WHAT CHEESE WORKS BEST WITH THIS SUPREME BAKED PIZZA CASSEROLE?
Traditionally, mozzarella is used as the main base ingredients when preparing pizza. I did not stray away from this idea and strongly suggest using mozzarella. In this recipe, I purchased pre-shredded cheese and the it melted just fine. If you have more time, by all means by fresh mozzarella and shred on your own. Cheddar cheese or any shredding/melting cheese will work though.
THERE IS FETA IN THIS RECIPE, DO I HAVE TO USE IT?
As stated before, this recipe is very similar to a pizza bowl I ordered at Marcos. The baked pizza bowl was topped with feta cheese and it did not disappoint. Feta cheese has a slight "bite" to it and adds a slight tangy flare to most dishes.
In this instance, the feta cheese adds a salty, tangy and creamy note that is the perfect finish to this pizza casserole. If you are not a fan of feta, by all means leave it out. A few tasty substitutions for feta would be:
- Ricotta Cheese
- Goat Cheese
- Cottage Cheese

NOW IT IS TIME TO LAYER THE PIZZA CASSEROLE!
Now, grab your baking dish and begin pouring the marinara sauce first. Using a spatula or spoon, gently stir the marinara sauce and crushed tomatoes until combined. Next, sprinkled one third of the shredded cheese over the marina sauce and crushed tomato mixture. This helps to bind the casserole since we have omitted the carb ingredient, do not skip this step!
At the same time, layer the prepared meats and in this instance, the crumbled turkey sausage. Then, layer on your fresh veggies, I then layered the fresh bell pepper and sliced red onion. At the same time, now you will add the remaining pre-shredded mozzarella cheese ensuring the cheese is evenly distributed.
Lastly, layer the pepperoni slices on top of the mozzarella cheese, add the sliced black olives, crumbled feta cheese and dust with Italian seasoning.
